A new typeface for Waterschei

Amsterdam based visual communication studio Thonik is responsible for the visual identity of Manifesta 9. Each edition of Manifesta being specifically influenced by its location, both in terms of form and content, the location has also had a strong impact on how the design and visual styling change for each consecutive biennial. Accordingly, the overall look of Manifesta 9 is very different to previous editions, adopting a new design to reflect some of the issues proposed by the curatorial team under the guidance of Cuauhtémoc Medina.

Waterschei: a new typeface

Thonik has developed a design proposal for Manifesta 9 which extends beyond the concept of a logo. Their proposal constitutes the idea of creating a new typeface inspired by the industrial architecture of those former mining sites where Manifesta 9 takes place, and inspired by the cultural heritage of the host region. According to Thonik such a typeface should stylistically suit these post-industrial sites, but should also be able to go beyond the immediate historical associations. The design incorporates both monumental and unfinished elements - it is as bold as it is suggestive.
